TO DO LIST

"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves" (James 1:22)

I had last Sunday open, after three weeks of preaching every night in California, to visit Faith Life Church here in Branson. It's a great church, positive teaching, tight music, growing crowd. One line I've heard spoken over and over in their testimonies is, "I'm a doer, I'm a doer, I'm a doer of the Word". I guess triplicating a confession makes it that much more effective. The question is, Are you a doer of the word? In the last church we pioneered, I continually encouraged our people (at Destiny Church) to be Destiny Dreamers and Destiny Doers. You have to first see it (dreaming), but then you have to be it (doing). It's a matter of matching talk with walk, conversation with conduct. "Now therefore perform the doing of it..." (2 Corinthians 8:11)

"Do" is such a short word but has such long application. Dictionary.com bears 57 definition entries. I won't bore you with them all but to name a few, "do" means to perform, execute, accomplish, finish, complete, render, exhaust, manage, wrap up, forego, dispense with, etc. The DONE LIST is far more important than the TO DO LIST. Competing is wonderful, completing is priceless. Running in the race is commendable; crossing the finish-line is divine. The TO DO LIST covers intention, but intention requires attention then extension. Mary Kay built her career on rising at 5 AM and listing the six most important things needing accomplished that day, but then she went and DID what she wrote down. Just writing down plans may perfect one's penmanship but it doesn't increase revenue. "Faith if it has not works is dead being alone" (James 2:17). The key to success is rather elementary. Even Larry the Cable Guy figured out that common sense concept, Get 'ER DONE!

TO DO also has a futuristic ring to it. The list projects an ambition. No one gets more tired than the person who has nothing to do. The one who has no list has no life. Checking off daily projects builds a sense of accomplishment. And success breeds success. Writing it down commits us to action. Going public creates accountability. When we profess something, we are more apt to perform that something. To be hearers only, that is, to only have the Word of God stimulate our dreams without doing something about those dreams, is self-deceiving. Having stars in one's eyes makes that person starry-eyed. (Wasn't that deep?) To get from your recliner to stardom requires some "doing". NASA had to build a space shuttle to reach outer space. That required a big-time to do list. Solomon wanted to build a temple for God's glory. He had the blueprint drawn but needed to go to the bank. That's the problem with most of us, envisioning what we would like to become, but failing to assimilate the power of prayer. James said, "Ye have not because ye ask not". In other words, you have the floor-plan, now go the bank. David encouraged his starry-eyed son, "Arise therefore, and be doing, and the Lord be with you" (1 Chronicles 22:16). Add action to your unction. Diction is good (saying it), but friction is better (putting rubber to the road). If we want our kids to not just do as we say but to do as we do then it is obvious that we have to "do". Even marriage starts with "I do". And it's a lot easier to do when you have a to do list.
